WW1 Centenary Edition

Our Inspiring Purpose: WW1 Centenary Edition project was created to commemorate the First World War Centenary and works in partnership with the First World War Centenary commemorations throughout the UK.

The poster programme is based on historic values allowing young people to explore the history of the First World War and learn more about this significant time in history (this is done through research of a WWI poem, figure and photo/image) in addition to reflecting on their own personal values, sources of gratitude and their vision for a better world. The project works well in both an RME/PSHE/Citizenship context as well as in History lessons.

Like with our other projects, we use a special 3-page poster template to engage young people in an educational process involving research into the events of the First World War and learning about stories and living conditions at this time in our history.

“These soldiers died to make Britain the way it is today. If they hadn’t gone off to war, the world would be incredibly different. A lot of people living today may not be alive, me included.”

Hannah Louise Bell, (Student) The Glasgow Academy

“My research has made me realise how many opportunities i have now compared to the little opportunities there were back in the early 1900’s during World War One. It has also made me grateful to know those men fought for the life and freedom we have today. “

Leah Mctighe, Gracemount High School

“The importance of the programme cannot be underestimated in our current climate with all the conflicting pressures and influences at work on the youth of today. At the heart of the values and poster programme is the encouraging and nurturing of our young people to be the best that they can be and to recognise that they themselves have the key to being the change they want to see in the world.”

Carol Gollop, (Teacher) Inverurie Academy

“This has helped me define my purpose and aspirations for the future because I now know what my qualities are and which ones I should try to aspire to. I also know what I need to do to be a better person.”

Rachel Hogg, (Student) Lockerbie Academy

Inspiring Purpose enables pupils to explore their character, ideals and values through a unique poster template using web-based resources. The programme is ideal for 10-16 year olds and can be used with a small group, or an entire year group.

We ask teachers to submit their five most inspirational pieces of work to us by a set deadline 31st May 2018 so that their pupils can have the opportunity to receive awards and certificates for their work.

You will find a Teacher Manual to assist with the delivery of the programme available here. This manual is designed to provide you with suggestions for implementing Inspiring Purpose and includes recommended activities for each of the poster sections. It isn’t enough to have pupils complete the sections of the poster on their own without any preparation. It is important to lay the groundwork for pupils to complete the poster. This will include having pupils engage in several activities that encourage personal exploration.
